Fly this Great Lakes adventure, then land at Airventure

Ever feel like escaping to a cabin in the woods? This aviation tour will bring you "up north," from the soaring architecture of Chicago to a log cabin in Minnesota. We'll fly along the country's great inland seas of Lake Michigan and Lake Superior to the land of rustic lodges, clear-water streams and sand dune beaches, miles of bike trails, through dense forests, and — let's not forget the important stuff — cheese curds.

This tour is conveniently scheduled to end when and near where Oshkosh Airventure begins — plan accordingly!

What’s so special about this tour?

  • There's nothing better than a boat ride in July. Cruise the breezy and beautiful Chicago River on a narrated (and fascinating) River Architecture Tour
  • Visit Chicago's oldest nightclub and soundstage, The Green Mill Jazz Club, launching pad for Billie Holiday and other prolific names — not just musical. Al Capone's henchman, "Machine Gun" Jack McGunn, managed the mobster hangout during the 1920s
  • Fly the third coast up to Superior, the "greatest" Great Lake (so great it could swallow its four siblings and then three more bodies of water the size of Lake Erie)
  • Engage in a decidely less modern and more tranquil mode of transportation: the canoe, with a design that has changed little in thousands of years. The only sound will be your paddle on the water, and perhaps the call of a nearby loon
  • Play a round at Lakeview National Golf Course, the jewel of the North Shore, where 14 of 18 holes afford sprawling views of Lake Superior
  • Land and lunch in a time warp on Lake Michigan's Mackinac Island, where cars are banned (but planes are welcomed)
  • Practice your power lounging skills on the secluded beaches of Lake Michigan's Manitou Passage, a sheltered shortcut for boats traveling between Chicago and other ports
  • Hike the 400-foot "living dunes" of Sleeping Bear National Park on Lake Michigan's eastern shore (or have a picnic and watch others do all the work)
  • Napa Valley isn't the only home of award-winning American viticulture. Raise a glass or two on the Lake Michigan Shore Wine Trail tour
  • Relax and refresh in the region's top lodges and lakeside resorts
